Climate Ready Schools: Our Letter to Governor Newsom

With a projected $25 billion deficit in California's budget, it's critical that we support districts to spend each dollar wisely and maximize state and federal funding and incentives.

That’s why we’ve joined with a statewide coalition to write this letter asking Gov. Newsom to ensure that school infrastructure investments are cost-effective and aligned with California’s climate and equity goals, and to coordinate state, county, and local actions to safeguard children’s health and learning.

In the letter, we ask the governor to make three strategic, equity-focused investments in his next budget proposal:

  1. $10 million to develop a California Master Plan for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Schools

  2. $10 million over three years for technical assistance to help school districts leverage federal funding and incentives for decarbonization and resilience

  3. $100 million to convert at least 50 schools in low-income communities and communities of color to high-performing electric heat pump HVAC systems that safeguard indoor air quality and temperature.

Please sign-on to this letter and share your support of this urgent work. Our message grows stronger with every voice. Together, we can ensure every school campus performs its most critical function: providing a safe, healthy, and inspirational space for children to learn without disruption.
