New dashboard: 2025-26 extreme weather school closures

For the 2025-26 school year, we’ll be tracking school closures and disruptions from extreme weather events live on our website. In just the first week of school in most areas throughout the state, we saw 9,238 hours of lost learning time impacting 2,700 students already.

The reality is that these numbers will only increase as the school year continues. Fortunately, there are solutions that can keep the lights on, the air cool and clean, and our buildings and grounds safe: modern HVAC systems, green schoolyards and shade, structural resilience, and backup power.

This year, we’re committed to telling the stories behind these numbers so that California policymakers understand the need for leadership and investment. Please reach out to connect if you are interested in helping to shape these stories or share your experiences of how extreme weather is disrupting learning at your school or in your community.
