Brian Adesso, Director of Business Services, with $5.34M energy tax credit reimbursement check.

MENASHA, WI., May 2026 — Menasha Joint School District celebrated the receipt of a $5,341,740 check for ground-source heat pumps, a solar energy system, and battery energy storage installed at the new net-zero Maplewood Middle School.

The new school was constructed by Miron Construction. While the project always planned to include a ground-source heat pump system, solar panels and energy storage were added to the project once the opportunity to capture energy tax credits through Elective Pay became clear. The district worked with SMART Local 18 on the heat pump portion of the project, and earned a bonus credit for meeting prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements.

The new school opened in August 2025. The district worked with Baker Tilly to file for energy tax credits on April 7, 2026.

On May 6, 2026, the district received $5,341,740:

  • $4,058,399 for the ground-source heat pumps

  • $684,556 for the solar energy system

  • $598,785 for the energy storage system ($295,734 for energy storage, $303,051 for microgrid)
