Westborough Public Schools in Massachusetts receives a $1,800,000 check!
WESTBOROUGH, Mass., Jan 2025 — On January 13, 2025, Westborough Public Schools in Massachusetts celebrated the receipt of a $1,800,000 Elective Pay reimbursement check from the IRS for the installation of ground-source heat pumps at Annie E. Fales Elementary School.
The elementary school, which will serve a growing student population, has several energy-efficient features which have brought down the EUI (energy unit intensity) to 24.9, one-third of the typical intensity for school buildings. By electing to install a ground-source heat pump system with forty 600 ft. geothermal wells and a 508kW rooftop solar array, the school has become the state’s first net-positive energy public school.
Construction commenced while new students were still using the 58-year old original building for classes. The energy-efficient features were fully placed in service in 2023.
To design and build the new school, Westborough Public Schools worked with Gilbane Building Company, HMFH Architects Inc., and The Vertex Companies.
The district filed for their energy tax credits on October 28, 2024 with assistance from Energy Tax Savers.
