California Senate unanimously passes the Seal of Climate Literacy
On May 19, 2026, the California State Senate passed SB 1048 (Becker) to establish a State Seal of Climate Literacy with unanimous, bipartisan support.
What does a Seal of Climate Literacy look like in action?
School districts partnering with local trade schools to teach students about EV mechanics. An English teacher facilitating a socratic seminar about how poverty, place, and environmental justice intersect in The House on Mango Street. Students researching resilient farming practices to sustain their family ranches for decades to come. Young scientists researching urban stormwater management and making recommendations to their city councils. Youth transforming their climate anxiety into tangible, future-ready career skills.

What’s next for the Seal in California?
SB 1048 now goes to the State Assembly for consideration. With your support, we are building a robust statewide network of supporters – and we want to keep up our momentum.
Student voices and school district endorsements are our most powerful tools.
Know high school students? Encourage them to add their name as a student supporter — it takes less than a minute and sends a powerful message to legislators that young people are demanding that climate education be prioritized.
Connected to a school district? Ask your superintendent, school board member, or district curriculum coordinator to submit a letter of support. District endorsements carry significant weight with legislators. Use these resources to reach out to your district. (Not sure where to start? Email us and we'll help connect you with the right people in your district!)
Every new supporter demonstrates increasing public support as the bill makes its way through the Assembly. Share this blog, post on social media, and help us show California lawmakers that communities and students across the state are ready for the Seal of Climate Literacy!
