Washoe County School District in Nevada receives a $1,694,645 check!

WASHOE, NV., (2025) — Washoe County School District in Nevada received a $1,694,645 reimbursement from the IRS for a ground-source heat pump system installed at the new JWood Raw Elementary School.

In 2023, WCSD opened JWood Raw Elementary School in South Reno to relieve overcrowding in nearby schools. The new 745-student facility, constructed by Martin-Harris and Group West Construction, features a ground-source heat pump system that delivers highly efficient heating and cooling. The district pursued energy tax credits through Elective Pay, a federal funding mechanism that allows schools and other tax-exempt entities to receive cash reimbursements from the IRS for qualifying clean energy technologies, to help offset the project costs.

The district filed for a reimbursement in the spring of 2025 and received the $1,694,645 reimbursement that summer.

This new school represents a milestone in the district’s 15-year Facilities Modernization Plan (FMP) to upgrade every existing school within the district for efficiency and equity. Three additional facilities, E. Otis Vaughn Middle School, Silver Dollar Elementary School and the district’s Central Transportation Yard, incorporate clean energy technologies that currently qualify for federal energy tax credits, including geothermal heat pump technology.
