Highlights from a climate education roundtable during Boston Climate Week
During Boston Climate Week, Undaunted joined Mass Audubon, SubjectToClimate, and over 50 educators, students, and state and local leaders at Harvard Graduate School of Education for a working roundtable on climate education efforts underway across the Commonwealth.
During the event, we learned about a climate education bill (H.560 / S.391) to advance K-12 climate literacy by providing funding, resources and guidance for educators. This legislation was shaped by members of the Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC) working alongside state and local leaders.
Undaunted’s contribution was to share about work to advance the Seal of Climate Literacy nationally. The Seal is a high school graduation endorsement that recognizes students who have demonstrated a strong understanding of climate change through coursework and hands-on learning.
In partnership with Colorado-based nonprofit Lyra and a growing national coalition, Undaunted is helping bring the Seal to additional states. Given the momentum around climate education in Massachusetts and growing student demand for meaningful climate learning opportunities and recognition, we see strong potential for the Seal to complement the bill and expand access to climate education statewide.
We were energized by the interest and engagement from students, educators, and leaders during the roundtable and would welcome the opportunity to connect with others interested in advancing this work in Massachusetts.
