Lost Learning Time Map demonstrates how extreme weather is reshaping U.S. public schools

In 2022, Undaunted launched the Extreme Weather and Lost Learning Time Map - a national effort tracking when and where schools are forced to close or cancel activities due to extreme heat, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, snowstorms, and other climate-driven disruptions.

Three years into this effort, what had long been treated as isolated anecdotes has become visible – and undeniable. During the 2024-2025 school year alone, more than nine million students across nearly 10,000 schools experienced extreme-weather driven school closures, or disruptions. As extreme weather events become more frequent and widespread, the map and data are increasingly featured across major media outlets, and cited by leading research universities and institutions.

These stories, and the data behind them, are influencing how policymakers and school district leaders, and educators understand the intersection of climate, learning, and equity.

In 2025, we’ve expanded this work. By deepening research partnerships, translating findings into actionable policy recommendations, and launching state-specific extreme weather dashboards, we’re helping federal, state, and local leaders understand the impacts of climate change on students and schools, and prepare for a more resilient future.
