Connecting with Minnesota's School Clean Energy Leaders

Minnesota state leaders are setting the bar high for supporting schools in their clean energy transitions. On October 28, Undaunted joined school administrators, state agencies, and clean energy experts at the Energy Project Resource Summit for Schools. The summit focused on practical ways to finance school energy projects, reduce costs, and create healthy, resilient learning environments.

The Minnesota Climate Innovation Finance Authority (MnCIFA) represents an innovative approach to public funding. A state-level financing authority (commonly known as a "green bank"), MnCIFA is dedicated to accelerating clean energy investments across Minnesota, including in schools. Undaunted's Midwest Regional Director, Kristen Hengtgen, joined MnCIFA's Chief Investment Officer, Arpita Bhattacharya, on a panel moderated by John-Michael Cross, who manages the Minnesota Department of Commerce's Solar on Public Buildings program.

The conversation explored how schools can access green financing for clean energy projects and how MnCIFA's tools complement federal funding opportunities. We shared Undaunted's resources while learning from district leaders about their experiences navigating clean energy financing across the state.

Minnesota is setting a strong example of what happens when state agencies invest in giving schools and communities the tools, support, and funding they need to improve energy efficiency, air quality, and educational outcomes. We're energized by the leadership we saw in Minnesota and look forward to continuing to support the school districts doing this work in communities across the state.

State Funding Opportunities:

The Minnesota Department of Commerce is accepting proposals from eligible schools throughout Minnesota for the HVAC Pilot Grant Program until December 31, 2025. This program is designed to alleviate financial and energy burdens of schools, and prioritize schools based on federal Title I funding. In 2021, the Minnesota State Legislature established the Solar for Schools Grant Program. Administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce Division of Energy Resources, the program promotes the installation of solar energy systems on Minnesota schools, while using the opportunity to integrate renewable energy use into school curriculum.
