The Seal of Climate Literacy is on the Governor’s Desk

Senate Bill 1048 (Becker), which would create a California State Seal of Climate Literacy, passed through the legislature with strong bipartisan support and is now on Governor Newsom’s desk. He has until September 30 to sign it into law.

What is the Seal of Climate Literacy?

The California State Seal of Climate Literacy is a voluntary high school diploma distinction that would recognize students who demonstrate climate knowledge, systems thinking, and applied problem-solving skills. Students would earn the Seal through interdisciplinary coursework and real-world, solutions-oriented projects connected to their local communities and future careers.

California students are asking for hands-on, relevant, real-world learning that prepares them for their lives and futures shaped by climate change. They want to learn about what's happening, understand local impacts, and build the tools and experiences to contribute to a healthy and resilient future.

A State Seal of Climate Literacy is a win for kids, a win for climate, and a win for California.

Seal of Climate Literacy Supporters Across the State

Over the past several months, a powerful and diverse coalition has rallied behind a Seal of Climate Literacy: educators and students; school districts, teachers unions, community colleges, and education associations; environmental organizations and green economy employers; youth organizations and foundations; city and county governments; and health, education, and climate advocates.

Together, this coalition has sent letters, met with legislators, attended legislative hearings, spread the word, and built the groundswell of support that has gotten SB 1048 this far.
