Acton-Boxborough Regional School District in Massachusetts receives a $2,962,045 check!

ACTON, Mass., June 2025 — In Acton, Massachusetts, the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District received a $2,962,045 reimbursement check from the IRS in June 2025 for energy-efficient technologies installed throughout the new, consolidated Douglas & Gates Elementary School – Boardwalk Campus.

The new building was designed to be net-zero ready – featuring ground-source heat pumps, rooftop solar with battery storage, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. In the two years since construction was completed, the building has used less energy than its target Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 25, leading to significant savings on utility bills. The savings, combined with energy tax credits helps to reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers. The district partnered with PFM Financial Advisors, Consigli Construction, Arrowstreet, an architecture and design firm, and Eversource, a utility company, on the project.

This school is an important piece of our broader strategy throughout the Acton-Boxborough district to reduce our environmental impact, improve the health and wellness of students and staff, and provide an education in sustainability for future generations.
— Superintendent Peter Light

Plans are underway to continue energy-efficient upgrades across other schools.
