Building momentum toward healthy, resilient schools in 2025
Amidst the retreat of federal leadership on climate and clean energy, state and local leaders continue to lead on modernizing K–12 schools with clean energy solutions. And we continue to help these leaders unlock investment in their communities.
This year, we worked with a national community of partners – collaborating in new states, sharing trusted resources and tools, expanding climate literacy, and more – to support those committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to attend a safe, healthy, resilient school.
We’re excited to share highlights of the meaningful progress happening across the country.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority is investing $250M every two years into a heat pump retrofit program – one of four new state funding opportunities supporting school decarbonization.
The Climate Ready Schools Coalition in California worked to advance a Regional Climate-Resilient Schools Coordinator Network and shaped Prop 2 regulatory guidance for districts accessing the $8.5B school bond.s Network and shaped Prop 2 regulations for districts accessing the $8.5B school bond.
School district leaders in at least 29 states including Kentucky, Missouri, and Nevada are modernizing HVAC systems with ground-source heat pumps. These projects are earning energy tax credits which can make these systems the most affordable ones to install and operate.
State leaders in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington, Wisconsin, and beyond are advancing programs to equitably modernize K-12 facilities, and expand climate literacy and green workforce opportunities.
Rural and tribal communities across Iowa, Minnesota, West Virginia, and more are embracing clean energy at schools to lower costs, modernize facilities, and provide students with learning opportunitie
The growing impact of extreme weather on student health and learning is gaining attention by policymakers, researchers, and major media outlets, including TIME Magazine.
